John 12: 1-8
On The Edge On The Edge

There are two sayings: The first is from Nigeria:  "It is the heart that does the giving; the fingers only let go."  And the second is a quotation from the wonderful Lebanese poet of the early 20th Century, Kahlil Gibran:  “Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation."   This woman who takes an expensive jar of perfume and lavishes it upon Jesus' feet is making a gesture - a heartfelt gesture, with a broken-hearted sense that separation might lie just around the corner – a sense of what is to come at the end of the journey to Jerusalem. Her heart is full, and perhaps it is breaking, too. And when our hearts are full, when our hearts are breaking, we don't waste time calculating our expenses.
